Key features:
The George C was a steam ship dedicated to freight. It had a triple expansion engine and low pressure turbine that provided 342 NHP power, reaching a speed of 10 knots. The ship, 101.6 metres long with a steel hull, was built in 1939 by Smit Jan – Scheepswerven Jan Smit in Ablasserdam (Rotterdam, Netherlands), though it had a Lebanese flag.
The ship was carrying fertilizer from the Belgian port of Ghent to Macoris, in the Dominican Republic. The George C, according to official information, suffered a leak after which it ran aground and broke in two. Based on witness statements in the chronicles of the time, the shipwreck could have been intentional. The ship was scrapped, but it so happens that the accident occurred in the same place where there is a wreck of an older ship and from which several guns are preserved.
